How many vents do I need?
We recommend that one vent be installed for every 90m2 of roof space. It is also important to remember to allow the air to be replaced from somewhere, and so we recommend 4 eave vents per roof vent, and ideally one internal ceiling grille, to allow any hot trapped air to escape from inside your home.
How much will ventilation actually cool my house?
Given the variables inherent in house designs, it is impossible to provide precise guidance on what will happen to indoor room temperatures. However we do know that roof space temperatures can rise as high as 70°C, and vents can easily reduce this by 20-30°C, thereby reducing the heat loads on your ceiling insulation and any air conditioning ducts running through the roof space.
What happens if there is no wind, do the vents still work?
If the air in the roof is hotter than the ambient air outside, then the vent will allow that air to escape and help reduce the attic temperature.
Will my natural ventilator work if there is no wind?
Yes, a large proportion of the flow generated by a natural ventilator during the day is caused by a phenomenon known as 'Stack' effect. This is basically the process of hot air rising.
Are the vents noisy?
Bradford Ventilation natural ventilators are designed to run silently. The Bradford Ventilation powered ventilators are designed to run as quietly as possible, but depending on installation location may be audible to the home occupant.
Some of the Bradford Ventilation vents are made of plastic. Will this be a problem?
Plastic Bradford Ventilation vents are extremely strong and have been independently tested to withstand wind speeds in excess of 216 km/h. Bradford ventilators that are made from plastic are made from high grade engineering polymers, such as ASA polymers (Acrylonitrile Styrene & Acrylate). ASA is used for the majority of Bradford Ventilation housings, whilst Glass filled nylon is used for structural components. The plastic Bradford Ventilation use is designed for long life under Australian conditions and are UV stable.
Bradford Ventilation plastic vents are subjected to the same tests as our metal vents and are designed with quality and performance as the primary concern. The SupaVent for example can withstand wind speeds in excess of 216 km/h.
Will the vents make my house look like a factory?
The Supavent and clear TurboBeam are much more aesthetically appealing options for your home. They are both much less obvious on the roof. We also suggest that if vents are positioned just below the ridge line on the rear of the house, where possible, they will not be noticeable from the street.
How do rotary ventilators work?
Rotary ventilators allow hot air to escape from your roof, irrespective of prevailing wind. When wind is present, rotation of the top will boost the air extraction rate. Rotary ventilators take advantage of pressure differentials, which are either caused by temperature differences or wind.
What if I don’t want lots of vents on my roof?
The AiroMatic is the ideal product for larger homes – it is equivalent to installing 6 naturally powered vents.
Selecting a ventilator from the Bradford Ventilator powered roof ventilator range allows for a much greater flow rate per vent and as a result reduces the number of vents required for adequate performace.
What does a high specific flow rate mean (m3/hr/W)?
The specific flow rate allows for an easy value comparison to alternative products. It's simply the air flow rate per 1 watt of power consumption. The higher the number the more air flow generated by the fan per 1W of power used. It is important to also judge the product by the total flow rate as this is the number required to solve many ventilation problems.
Will I need an electrician to install an ecoFAN or Maestro?
Both products require a standard power point to plug in the transformer, often a power point can be reached within close proximity of the installation, therefore eliminating the need for an electrician. Where no power point is available, an electrician would be required to install one first.
Can ventilation be installed on both metal and tiled roofs?
The flashing supplied is suitable for use on both metal and tiled roofs, and the instructions make the different steps clear.

Which side of my house is best to position the ventilator unit?
When possible the ventilator unit should be installed on the prevailing wind side.
Does Odyssey draw dust & pollen into my home?
You will have some dust and pollen enter your home if you have a window open, regardless of whether Odyssey is operating or not. Most of the dust and pollens entering come from people, attached to their clothing and footwear.
What is the difference between Odyssey HR2100 and Odyssey H1800?
Odyssey HR2100 is the fully automated version, which includes internal and external humidity and temperature sensors. These sensors monitor climatic conditionals, allowing the system to automatically respond and adjust to help ensure the user’s desired home temperature is maintained. The user sets the desired temperature on the easy to use touch screen control panel and the Odyssey HR2100 does the rest. Odyssey HR2100 also has the ability to expel hot air out of the roof space to reduce roof space temperature as well as living areas.
Odyssey H1800 is whole of home ventilation that is controlled manually by the user. The users decides when to run the system by using simple ‘On/Off’ switch. Odyssey H1800 ventilates the home’s living spaces, exchanging the air in an 150m2 home up to 5 times per hour. Unlike the HR2100, Odyssey H1800 does not remove hot air out of the roof space, it removes hot air from the living space only.
Does Odyssey use the air in my roof space to circulate in the home?
No, Odyssey only draws air out of the roof space or the home, depending on which is more beneficial under the current conditions.
How much will Odyssey actually cool my house?

Why doesn’t Odyssey have a filter like other ventilation systems?
Odyssey removes the air from your home. There is no need to filter the air being extracted from your home. Fresh air enters your home though your doors and windows in the same manner as it would if you were to open your windows.
The difference between Odyssey and some other home ventilation systems is that it doesn’t require an air filter which needs replacing.
If I have another type of roof vent, like a Whirlybird or Windmaster, will these affect Odyssey and do I need to remove them?
Your roof ventilator/s will continue to help reduce roof space temperatures and reduce the risk of winter condensation. They complement the operation of Odyssey during the day, when it will normally be exhausting air from the roof space. They do not interfere with the efficient operation of Odyssey as a home ventilation device. The advantage of Odyssey is that it will continue to operate when there is no wind.
Can I use Odyssey instead of air conditioning to cool my home?
If you are interested in reducing the running time of your air conditioning, Odyssey is a great complementary system.
Odyssey is a ventilation system. It operates by exhausting warm air out of the home to draw cooler external air into the home, through a simple process of air exchange.
On days of extreme temperatures, as the temperature rises, air conditioning will need to be used to deal with the peak temperature (hottest part of the day). As the temperature cools down, Odyssey can be used to introduce the cooler air into the home faster. For example, on a hot day, without Odyssey, you may run the air conditioner from 2pm to 10pm. If you were to install Odyssey, you may only run the air conditioner from 2pm to 6pm. That’s a 4 hour saving.
If the kWh rate is $0.30, the running cost of a 5kW inverter split air conditioner, operating at 30% of its maximum power over a 4 hour period would be $1.80. Odyssey runs at a maximum of 55W, so the maximum cost of Odyssey running for 4 hours is 0.07¢. A lot less energy consumed and a big saving over the summer months!
How much does Odyssey cost to run?
Odyssey uses a maximum of 55W when running at full speed. As long as the settings are set correctly, it will only run when required.
It is estimated that Odyssey will cost about $30 per year to run. This is based on a run time of 8hrs per day for 5 months and 3hrs per day for 7 months, at $0.30/kWh.
How much does Odyssey cost to run?
Odyssey is a smart system that exchanges the air in your home, constantly monitoring the temperatures inside and outside with a controller and several sensors. In the warmer months, when the temperature inside your home is higher than the temperature outside your home the system turns on the roof mounted fan and rapidly draws air out of your home.
At the same time, cooler air is drawn into your home from outside. The feeling of air movement in the home can be likened to that of a gentle sea breeze.
In cooler months, if the temperature inside your home is cooler than the outside temperature, the system will activate to draw the warmer air into your home.
The result is a more comfortable home that has a fresh air feeling.
